Proper care and maintenance can extend the life of your window furnishings while keeping them looking fresh and performing at their best. Whether you have blinds, curtains, or shutters, each material requires a slightly different approach.

Below we share our top cleaning and care tips to help you keep your window treatments looking like new.

1. General Maintenance Tips

  • Dust regularly: Use a microfibre cloth, feather duster or vacuum with a brush attachment to remove surface dust before it builds up.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Stick to mild detergents or manufacturer-recommended products to prevent damage to fabrics or finishes.
  • Spot clean promptly: Dab (don't rub!) stains with a damp cloth and mild soap before they set in.
  • Ventilate: Keep your room well ventilated to prevent mould, especially on heavier fabrics like blockout curtains.

2. Cleaning Blinds by Type

Roller Blinds

Roll the blind fully down and gently wipe with a damp cloth. For fabric roller blinds, test any cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first.

Venetian Blinds (Aluminium, Timber, or PVC)

Close the slats and dust with a microfibre cloth. Then tilt the slats in the opposite direction and repeat. Use a damp cloth for sticky areas. Avoid soaking timber slats.

Vertical Blinds

Vacuum gently or wipe individual slats with a clean, damp cloth. Spot clean as needed with a mild soap solution.

Honeycomb/Cellular Blinds

Use a hair dryer on a cool setting to blow out dust from the cells, or gently vacuum with a brush attachment.

3. Curtain Care Tips

  • Sheer curtains: Usually machine washable on a gentle cycle. Hang to dry immediately to avoid wrinkling.
  • Blockout/thermal curtains: May require professional cleaning depending on the lining. Check the care label.
  • Linen or natural fibres: Spot clean with a damp cloth and consider dry cleaning for deeper cleans.

4. When to Call the Pros

If your furnishings are heavily soiled, made of delicate materials, or you're unsure of the correct method—don't risk it. A professional cleaner can deep clean without damage and may even extend the life of your investment.

5. Preventative Care is Key

  • Keep windows closed on windy, dusty days
  • Use tie-backs or holdbacks to prevent dragging on the floor
  • Install pelmets or valances to reduce dust settling on curtain tops
